Groundwork London is working with the London Borough of Brent to re-design the streetscape outside Moatfield, a residential block of flats close to Brondesbury Park road and Christchurch Avenue, and create a shared garden space with opportunity for nature and enjoyment through Co-creation.

The site was recently cleared of an extensive are of evergreen tree planting which had created an ASB problem, and dominated the available recreational space. The site requires a new design approach which reflects the needs of residents, with a few key aims to deliver, including:
• Smaller, or more sensitively positioned trees
• Wildflowers and spaces for wildlife
• A grassy area for children, and for the to be able to access nature
• Views from the adjacent properties might also be taken into consideration
Our Approach
The site currently represents a ‘blank canvas’ from which to work. By engaging the community in developing ideas of how this area could be improved and provide opportunities for socialising, play, recreation and relaxation, we hope to uncover this site’s huge potential. We aim to integrate key solutions into our design approach and implement climate mitigating solutions wherever possible.
It’s vital that the community have an active voice in the design phase of the site. An active engagement process with the local community will accompany the design phase, and potentially an element of active volunteer management (subject to community interest) which could be facilitated by Groundwork’s community gardeners.
Outreach to residents
Based on residents’ priorities we will develop a design and carry out improvements to the garden to make it a more attractive and biodiverse space. Initial ideas include colourful and attractive planting, raised planters for community gardening (subject to community interest), improved access, small scale natural play features and wildlife features.
We are keen to hear from as many residents as possible to ensure improvements meet their priorities and aspirations.
